A true Friend of the Sea
Our farms are the first abalone farms in the world to achieve a sustainable certification. The Friend of the Sea certification affirms that our farming does not harm nature — independent recognition of the responsibility on which Abagold was founded.

How We Raise Them
Responsible feed
What our abalone eat is considered as carefully as the water they live in. The feed our Haliotis midae are raised on is formulated and produced in-house at our sister company, Specialised Aquatic Feeds — a specialised feed manufacturer in Hermanus that began as Abagold's own feed department, with a team grounded in aquaculture and nutritional science.
That feed is served in water borrowed, not taken: our land-based farm runs on a continuous flow-through of fresh seawater, pumped from the ocean, through the tanks and back to the sea, rather than recirculating standing water.
This way of farming carries independent recognition — our farms were the first abalone farms in the world to achieve Friend of the Sea certification for sustainable aquaculture.
Water Quality
The ocean, flowing through the farm
Our land-based farm sits at the ocean's edge, its 4,000 tanks supplied with over 10,000 tons of seawater every hour — so our abalone live their whole lives in moving seawater.
We uphold rigorous standards in water quality, animal care, biosecurity and food safety, and the water flowing through the farm is measured on an ongoing basis.
