Record Prices at Our First 25K Investment Grade Abalone Auction

Our first 25K Investment Grade Abalone Auction has set a new benchmark for South African dried abalone. At an auction dinner in Hong Kong on 21 June 2023, all 24 hand-selected lots drew spirited bidding from more than 65 international buyers, with prices in both the live and silent auctions reaching unprecedented levels.

The evening belonged to Lot 9, "Zwelihle", named for the community that borders our farm in Hermanus. Its 25 catties of 25-year-old dried abalone fetched over HK$70,000 — the highest documented price on record for dried abalone of that age and quantity.

The dinner also marked the launch of our Investment Grade category, placing Abagold at the forefront of a market steeped in tradition. Each lot was chosen by hand and presented in a format designed to appreciate in value as the abalone matures.

In keeping with our commitment to the place we call home, ten per cent of the proceeds were donated to the Abagold Development Trust, which supports development initiatives in the Hermanus communities where so many of our people live. Our managing director, Tim Hedges, spoke of our aspiration to "advance the value of abalone farming while safeguarding our sustainable farming practices".
