Abagold Development Trust backs maths enrichment at Mount Pleasant Primary

Few things give us more pleasure than seeing young minds in our community flourish. Through the Abagold Development Trust, we are supporting an after-school mathematics enrichment programme at Mount Pleasant Primary School here in Hermanus, funding a dedicated tutor and paying for the pupils' stationery.

The programme, recently featured in The Village News, works with around 30 of the school's most promising Grade 4 and 5 pupils through after-school sessions and holiday workshops. Devised by Principal Lincoln Wildschut and his team in late 2023, it has gathered momentum ever since — Hermanus High School has donated 30 laptops, and the newspaper reports that the initiative "went from strength to strength last year", with the benefits spilling over into the children's other subjects, their general knowledge and their problem-solving.

During the recent school holidays, the young mathematicians also paid us a visit, swapping their laptops for a tour of the Abagold plant. We hope the outing offered a glimpse of where a solid grounding in mathematics can lead — the science, the technology and the careers that exist right on their doorstep.

Investing in the education of our community's children sits at the heart of what the Abagold Development Trust does, and we will be following the progress of Mount Pleasant's young mathematicians with great interest.
